Myanmar liveaboard highlights
Accessible only by liveaboard, diving in Myanmar’s Mergui Archipelago and Burma Banks offers a rare sense of exploration in one of Southeast Asia’s least visited marine regions. Scattered across the Andaman Sea to the north of Thailand’s Surin Islands, this vast collection of remote islands, reefs, and seamounts is known for dramatic underwater topography, healthy coral growth, pelagic encounters and macro life. With minimal fishing pressure and few visiting vessels, Myanmar delivers uncrowded diving in pristine conditions, and a truly off-the-beaten-path experience that sets it apart from Thailand and other well-explored diving destinations.
Abundant marine life
Unspoilt reefs
Stunning natural topography
Varying currents
Something for every diver
Myanmar’s Mergui Archipelago encompasses over 800 islands spread across an area of 12,000 km² of the northern Andaman Sea. Burmese waters were closed to visitors until 1997, and only a small number of liveaboards have taken the opportunity to dive there since then. As a result, the region remains one of Southeast Asia’s least explored dive destinations, offering a true sense of discovery.
Aside from small communities of Moken sea gypsies, the islands are largely uninhabited and are predominantly defined by dramatic limestone formations, submerged caves and tunnels, and isolated pinnacles surrounded by healthy hard and soft corals. Marine life is rich and varied, with encounters ranging from schooling fish, rays, and reef sharks to seasonal encounters with whale sharks and manta rays, while the reefs also support a rich variety of macro life including frogfish, nudibranchs, crustaceans, and seahorses.
The combination of striking topography, diverse marine life, and minimal boat traffic creates a calm, unspoilt environment that feels distinctly different from more developed Andaman Sea diving destinations.
Myanmar's Mergui Archipelago boasts some of the most amazing, unspoilt dive sites in all of south-east Asia.
